How Vegetarianism Changed My Natural Hair

“If you would speak with a vegetarian you often hear stories of how great the life of a vegetarian/vegan is and how their skin and hair improved. Well, in my case that is partly true.”

A couple of months ago I had a reality check and decided to change my lifestyle completely. Being the animal lover I am, I decided to stop consuming meat. Besides, my stomach problems also contributed to this decision. I can share the results of my research about the meat industry with you, but that would be a very long list.

If you would speak with a vegetarian you often hear stories of how great the life of a vegetarian/vegan is and how their skin and hair improved. Well, in my case that is partly true. When I became a vegetarian I had an outbreak of pimples, while I normally have pimples around my period. My curls lost their glance and it became unmanageable after shampooing. It did not even matter what conditioner I applied in order to detangle my hair: my hair was still very brittle. Due to all these I was considering to cut my hair.

It was not until I developed eczema on my hand that I realized that my body was lacking essential vitamins. Meat consists of proteins, vitamin B1, B6 and B12. Consuming proteins does not only contribute to great health of your hair. As soon as I realized this, I started balancing my food. Besides, I also bought special supplements for vegans/vegetarians.

Three months after becoming a vegetarian I started noticing increased hair growth. Besides, the glance of my hair returned and my hair became more manageable. I was able to finger detangle my hair without making ugly faces, which expressed my pain. My hair is also much more moisturized, but I tend to link this to the fact that I consume much more water during the day.

I am often asked whether I would recommend becoming a vegetarian in order to improve the skin condition or the health of the hair. This is a question, which is difficult to answer. Some people are recommended by a specialist to become a vegan, because of certain diseases (for instance, intestinal and stomach diseases). I can confirm that my stomach problems almost disappeared. However, if you want to switch to vegan/vegetarian lifestyle because of beauty purposes it might be more difficult to carry on with the new lifestyle. If you still would like to become a vegan/vegetarian because of these reasons, I would recommend doing research prior to the switch. Nothing is impossible and as soon as you find your balance being a vegan/vegetarian is not a choice but part of your life.

I just came across your blog through naturallycurly.com, and I truly enjoyed your post. Thanks for the information about your experience with being a vegetarian/vegan. I’ve been thinking about becoming vegan within the last 4 months, and this post just helped to ignite my search for more of the vitamins and supplements I will need during my transition, and possibly for life.
